Mike and Christina Kelcourse saw waste going to waste. So in 2020 the couple founded Sunshine Organics and Compost in Jacksonville, which they said is the city's first commercial-scale food waste composting facility.

The Compost Jax facility is expanding its composting pad and upgrading its equipment with funds from the USDA fertilizer production grant.

A Jacksonville company received a federal grant to lead a change in fertilizer

As the first ever commercial food waste composter in Duval County, this grant will enable Sunshine Organics and Compost to provide innovative composting and biochar products that reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and improve soil quality.

Jacksonville City Council has approved a new six month pilot program to encourage and test the efficacy of commercial composting, a type of food waste management, through partnership with local composting facility Sunshine Organics and Compost.

The city of Jacksonville, Florida, has approved a “Food Waste Diversion (Composting) Pilot Program” to enable food-based businesses to compost food in partnership with the city and Sunshine Organics & Compost LLC.

Compost Jax accepts pre and postconsumer vegetative food waste and bakery products, dairy products, agricultural and forestry waste, yard trimmings, BPI-certified compostable foodservice ware and liner bags, soiled paper, pizza boxes and more.
